What is the Goal of a Wrestling Match?
Most people, if not everyone would answer that the goal of a wrestling match is to win the match.
That answer is correct but incomplete.
I believe the goal of a wrestling match is to win that match against your opponent, any future matches against that same opponent or anyone watching the match and to best prepare you for your ultimate match of your season.
I believe a wrestler accomplishes his goal in a wrestling match by dominating the match.
I believe domination is defined by the difference in points scored in a match.
A wrestler dominates matches by being a relentless point scorer.
I believe a wrestler will have the greatest probability of scoring the highest amount of points in the shortest amount of time by wrestling in advantage positions and avoiding or eliminating the time wrestled in disadvantaged positions.
If a wrestlers’ goal is to dominate the match, to put up the highest amount of points in the shortest amount of time, he needs to be jealous of his time.
If it is determined that a wrestler has an advantage position – one where the match-up with his opponent best suits him scoring the highest amount of points in the shortest amount of time, then a wrestler has one goal.
To get to that position.
Getting to his advantage position should be the number one priority of every setup, every series, every choice.
The key to dominating matches, and achieving one’s present and future goals is to wrestle from an advantage position for as long as one can in a match.
